I have 2 friends who have been members of probably the most popular (and respected?) website where adults meet other adults who are seeking fun and well, umm, sex.

And a preemptive apology goes out to my Dad who I pray, is not reading this blog entry! Dad, I “joined” just for the blog, I promise!

Being the professional writer I like to fancy myself as, I was compelled to join the website for a month in the name of research (Images of John Levitz…”Yeah, that’s the ticket” come to mind).

But seriously guys, here’s the deal…

Right out of the gate, I learned a couple of things. One, men don’t post a picture of themselves at their nephew’s T-Ball game and I’ll just leave it at that and two, the very first thing I learned was that there are at least nine million two hundred and seventy six thousand married men out there who are clearly unhappy with the sex, or lack there of, in their marriage. And they seem to all be married. Really? Call me naïve…but seriously, let’s say 95% of the men are married (I lovingly refer to them as “Playas” aka: Players) .

Anyway, I say Wow. That was both shocking and nauseating at the same time. Half of the men put it right out there on their status “married”…. and they sought married women that were in the same “predicament”… The other half lie out loud. Maybe this explains why I have yet to marry.

From high profile executive men to How’d-you-get-a-computer-in-jail? men – in 30 days, I’m convinced I’ve seen them all.

Now granted, there are couples that have “open” marriages and seek others to enter their bedroom (or car or closet or hotel room). Now, I don’t even know what to say here. I am far from a prude, but I m a little perplexed on this one. I guess I am too jealous or insecure of a person to consider this option if I were married.

In the month I was a member, straight couples and Bi couples approached me alike – I was approached mostly by men (even 2 men) but once by a lesbian women tossed in for good measure (I was pretty proud of this since it’s a first).

I even met a friend, a half a world away, literally, who I still exchange e-mails with – our e-mails having nothing to do with sex or the website. Go figure. Odd place to make friends.

I have to tell you, I was initially just curious, then shocked, and now, I suppose while still a bit shocked, I have a better understanding of why so many people seek sex online. I mean who wouldn’t want the warm fuzzies of adoration and to feel uber desirable?

Now, that doesn’t mean it’s for me and I certainly don’t condone cheaters or liars regardless of the forum (personally, I prefer men with class – and a brain is nice too) but I can see why people would have a fascination with these types of sites.

I mean really, most people enjoy sex so I imagine it’s the rabid driver behind the success of these types of site.

Like most everything we love, such as yummy food and fine wine, I think sex can be good and healthy – but it can also be unhealthy and I would think, potentially unsafe.

For a women certainly, it is not wise to go off meeting strangers for sex alone. And I mean don’t go alone!
